Hornsey New to Old Photo ‘Time Ripples’ (HD)

Pull up a chair and travel back in time with this short video I’ve created, featuring modern day photos of Hornsey, London N8, transforming seamlessly (well, for the most part) to exactly the same view, with images dating back to as long ago as the 1860s (!) Time Ripples indeed! Enjoy….

Photo locations/historical details (with timestamps) below:

(0:08) The junction of Middle Lane and Hornsey High Street, looking East – and the same view c.1914 with soldiers outside what seems to be an army recruiting office.

(0:39) Looking East up Hornsey High Street, with The Three Compasses over the road – and the same view, early 1900s.

(1:03) Priory Road looking East over to the junction with Nightingale Lane – and the same view c.1905.

(1:26) Tottenham Lane looking South with the Hornsey Historical Society Headquarters to the right – and the same view c.1860 (!) The H.H.S. building was then the old school house. An amazingly rural scene!

(1:49) The junction of Church Lane and Hornsey High Street, looking South to St Mary’s Infants School with the old Church Tower to the right – and the same aspect c.1905 with the ‘new’ St Mary’s Church looming into view (built in 1889, but demolished in 1969 due to subsoil instability).

(2:13) Looking North from the junction of Church Lane and Hornsey High Street with the old pump house (now the Riverside Lounge) to the far right – and the same view c.1900, with a Cobbler’s wooden cottage in the foreground (this was demolished c.1904, around the same time that the pump house was constructed).

(2:36) Looking South on Tottenham Lane and where the road bisects to Church Lane on the right, with Hornsey Police Station on the left – and the same view c.1900 with the demolished Central Library and Fire Station appearing.

(3:01) The view looking North from Hornsey Police Station on Tottenham Lane with Church Lane to the left – and the same aspect c.1900 with the Central Library and Fire Station appearing on the left.

(3:28) Another shot of Hornsey High Street looking East – and the same early 1900s view.

(3:53) Looking over Hornsey High Street from outside St Mary’s Junior School, to the junction with Birkbeck Road – and the same view from what used to be the Hornsey Recreation Grounds public gardens c.1910.

(4:18) Looking East up Hornsey High Street with The Great Northern Railway Tavern in the distance and the old public bath/wash house in the foreground – and the same view in 1890.

(4:44) Looking West over Tottenham Lane to the ‘Harold Road Community Garden’ from the junction with Harvey Road – and the same view of St Mary’s Upper Grade School for Girls c.1905.

(5:07) ….and the same from a slightly different angle, with Hornsey Police Station on the far right.

(5:32) Looking West down Hornsey High Street from the late 19th century cattle trough, outside the Great Northern Railway Tavern – and the same view c.1915.

(5:55) Looking North-East down Tottenham Lane, with what is now Funky Brownz on the right and Hornsey Station in the distance – and the same view around the early 1900s.

(6:20) Looking East to the old Church Tower from the bottom of Hillfield Avenue – and the same view, late 19th century, with a beautiful colourised photo.

(6:45) Looking North over the graveyard to Hornsey Old Church Tower hidden behind a tree – and the same view (late 19th century) with the main body of the church appearing (which was demolished in 1927).

(7:10) The view from the roundabout at the bottom of Ferme Park Road looking North up Tottenham Lane with Holy Innocents Church Tower behind the trees – and the same view c.1905.
